Dog Walk at Latta Nature Preserve

If you’re a little tired of the same old dog walk routes, here’s one to try. Latta Nature Preserve, at 6345 Sample Road, Huntersville, is right outside of Charlotte, and is a wonderful natural resource.

It is situated along the shore of Mountain Island Lake, so offers stunning lake views, and also includes two launch areas for canoeing and kayaking.

Latta Nature Preserve is also home to Quest Nature Center and Carolina Raptor Center.

The 1,460 acres includes 16 miles of trails of varying difficulties, so you have plenty to choose from. You can check out a trail map here.

Audubon Trail

We’re going to highlight the .7 mile Audubon Trail. It’s a very easy walk and is perfect for senior dogs. The Audubon Trail is a loop trail in the Southwest corner of the preserve. When you drive into Latta, just keep driving and it’s the last thing on your left.

There’s a parking lot there, as well as a shelter and picnic table. This is a popular spot for fishing.

Along the Audubon Trail you’ll see some interesting little structures. This is a hot spot for fairy houses and gnome homes! Children build these structures out of twigs, pine cones and other natural items to attract the magical creatures. There’s even a Fairy House Festival here every February. Keep your eyes open for these little houses!

Dogs must be kept on a leash here. Please pick up dog waste. There are trash cans available. There are signs that say that swimming and wading are not allowed.

One of the joys of taking dogs to new places for walks is the different smells. Dogs experience the world through their noses, so if you want to give your dogs a real treat, bring them somewhere with smells that are new to them!
